So, just what is adventure travel?

So, let's define adventure travel for this site. Adventure Travel is
travel where one stretches beyond their normal boundaries; seeking
out experiences that are new and unfamiliar. Since that's a rather
broad definition of adventure, let's narrow it down a bit further.
Bungee jumping and parachuting can indeed be adventurous, but one
doesn't necessary have to travel to do it. And once you leap, your
adventure ends quickly. Motor sports are adventurous too, but I hope
to focus on adventures in the great outdoors, where nature is the
adventure. So, motor sports like auto racing, motorcycle touring,
RV'ing and four-wheeling will not be covered. Expect to read about
kayaking, canoeing and rafting, skiing, dog-sledding, hiking, scuba
and snorkeling, and more.

So then, what can you expect to read about here? First, how to get
started. This is "Adventure Travel 101" after all. How to decide
what trip is right for you. Expected benefits of adventuring.
Finding and selecting a trip that's right for you, and selecting an
outfitter. Don't worry, an outfitter is a company that runs trips.
At some future date, if you're really, really adventurous, you can
plan all aspects of your trip yourself. But that's well beyond the
scope of "Adventure Travel 101". What to expect, and how to
prepare. And of course, a just a bit about how I got started and
some of the trips I've done. And links to stories, to outfitters,
and to other sites of interest.

Adventure travel begins with taking the first step. Are you ready?
OK, let's go!!!

About the quote.

People travel to wonder at the height of the mountains, at the huge waves of the seas, at the long course of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motion of the stars, and yet they pass by themselves without wondering. - St. Augustine

This quote highlights for me the quandary of adventure. And I'm not speaking of mountain climbing, surfing, sailing the seven seas, or traveling into space. I'm speaking of more ordinary pursuits, such as finally pursing that hobby you've always had an interest in, of learning to dance, of traveling to that one place you've always wanted to see, of pursuing the career you spend all your free time dreaming of. And that's the quandary of seeing other people, just like you, doing these thing and admiring their talent and their work, without really looking deep inside ones' self and seeing that you too can live this dream, enjoy this life.

Yes, wonder about all these things, but don't stop there. Actually see and know that this too can be your destiny.
